By Car: From the M6
If you’re coming from the M6, exit at Junction 40 and join the A66. Go straight over the first roundabout, and take the second exit, marked the A686 towards Alston. Drive for about 20 miles and you will arrive in Alston. Take the right turn and drive up the main street of the town. At the top of the town, make sure to follow the road to the right (B6277) and ignore the fork to the left, marked Nenthead. Follow the B6277 until you come to a crossroads, with a right turn to Garrigill. We are the next turning on the right, where there is a sign marked ‘Loaning Head’.
By Car From the A1
If you’re coming from the south-east follow the A1 Northbound and exit at junction 56, marked the B3275 for Piercebridge. Take the first exit at the roundabout and follow the road all the way to the end, where you turn left and join the A67 towards Barnard Castle. Onece you drive into Barnard Castle, head straight over the mini-roundabout by the petrol station, and turn right onto the B6278. Follow this road until it turns into the B6282, and follow signs to Middleton-in-Teesdale. Once you arrive in Middleton, drive through the centre of town and follow the road over the bridge. This road turns into the B6277, which you continue to follow for approx 18 miles. Take a left turn signposted Loaning Head. It is also signposted as a ‘no through road’. Continue down the hill until you reach a group of houses where you will the see the byre on your right. The owners live in the house on the left. If you reach the crossroads signposted for Garrigill and Nenthead you’ve gone too far.
From Newcastle (Gallowgate/St James), take the Arriva 685 bus to Carlisle, and disembark at Brampton (Cumbria) Market Place, outside HSBC Bank. The timetable is available here. Then take the number 680 bus from Brampton (Cumbria) Front Street o/s old Co-op 680 (Telfords Coaches) to Nenthead (timetable here). Please contact us in advance and we will come and collect you. In winter please note you will need to disembark at Alston.
Travel to Carlisle on the West Coast mainline, or Newcastle on the East Ciast mainline, then follow the directions for bus travel. Please make sure to check bus times toensure you can make connections.
Isaac’s Byre is conveniently located ¼ mile from the Coast to Coast Cycle Route. From the West (Penrith) follow the marked C2C route to Garrigill, and from the East, follow the C2C from Sunderland or Newcastle.
